Firework Safety Tips from Dr. Chris Miskovsky, Hand Surgeon

As a hand surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly a celebration can turn into tragedy due to fireworks injuries. Memorial Day marks the start of summer fun, but it’s also one of the most dangerous weekends for hand injuries. Here are some essential tips to keep your hands – and your holiday – safe:

🔥 1. Leave It to the Pros

Attend public firework displays conducted by professionals. Consumer fireworks are unpredictable and can cause devastating injuries in a split second.

2. Never Hold Fireworks in Your Hand

This might seem obvious, but every year I treat patients who tried to light a firework while holding it. It’s never safe – always place fireworks on the ground before lighting.

👨👩👧 3. Keep Kids Far Away

Sparklers can reach 2,000°F – hot enough to melt metal. They are not toys. Never give them to young children, and supervise older kids closely.

🧯 4. Prepare for the Worst

Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire. If a firework doesn’t ignite, don’t relight it – soak it with water and dispose of it safely.

🧤 5. Don’t DIY

Homemade fireworks and modifications to store-bought ones are illegal and extremely dangerous. Injuries from these are often the most severe – including traumatic amputations.

🧠 6. Protect Your Brain – and Your Hands

Avoid alcohol while lighting fireworks. Impaired judgment and delayed reaction time are a dangerous mix when handling explosives.

🚫 7. Don’t Try to Pick Up a “Dud”

A misfire might be delayed – and picking it up can lead to serious injuries. Wait 20 minutes, soak it in water, and throw it away.

Dr. Chris Miskovsky’s Final Word:

“Your hands are essential tools for your life and livelihood. Don’t risk them for a few seconds of flash. Celebrate safely and preserve what matters most.”
